Various health benefits of seaweed 1. Helps maintain weight Some types of seaweed, such as brown seaweed, contain the pigment fucoxanthin, which increases fat breakdown and prevents fat formation. The main fiber content contained in seaweed is alginate. Studies have found that alginate can slow gastric emptying. As a result, you will feel fuller and eat less the next meal. Seaweed is also believed to regulate the hormone leptin, reduce hunger, and make you full longer because it contains protein. 2. Smooth digestion The fiber content in seaweed can help prevent constipation and ensure smooth digestion. Seaweed also contains prebiotics, which are microorganisms that are beneficial for the intestines. Prebiotics play a role in reducing the risk of certain dangerous bacterial infections. 3. Increase energy To carry out various activities, of course, you need energy. The next benefit of seaweed that you can get is to increase energy. The iron minerals in seaweed can help the body to produce energy. Meanwhile, iron deficiency can have an impact on anemia, which makes it easier for you to feel tired and lethargic. You can meet your iron intake by eating seaweed. 4. Stabilize blood sugar Research shows that a diet high in fiber can help improve blood sugar levels. You can get this fiber from various kinds of vegetables, fruit, and seaweed. The fucoxanthin and alginate compounds in seaweed are believed to reduce insulin resistance and stabilize blood sugar levels, and prevent type 2 diabetes. 5. Accelerate wound healing The benefit of seaweed that is no less important is that it helps wounds heal quickly. Seaweed is rich in vitamin K which plays a role in blood clotting. Vitamin K sends a chemical signal where platelets collect blood and clot it, so that when you are injured, the wound stops flowing. 6. Maintain healthy bones and strong teeth Seaweed also contains calcium. If you are allergic to cow's milk or are lactose intolerant, you may consider seaweed as a source of calcium. While calcium deficiency can have a negative impact on muscles and cells that coordinate with the nervous system. 7. Improve thyroid function The thyroid has an important role in the body's metabolic system. To carry out its function, the thyroid gland needs iodine intake which can be obtained by consuming seaweed or iodized salt. If the iodine requirement is not fulfilled, your chances of developing hypothyroidism will increase.
8. Maintain heart health Seaweed is a great source of water soluble fiber which also contains omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. All three are known for their ability to maintain heart function and health. Several studies also show that the nutritional content in seaweed seems to be able to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, both in total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. In these studies, it is also mentioned that seaweed can help prevent blood clots. However, further clinical research is needed to strengthen this evidence. 9. Strengthens the immune system A number of laboratory studies have shown that the antioxidant and anti-allergenic compounds in seaweed have the ability to prevent the entry of various viruses. For example, the herpes virus and HIV. In addition, seaweed also contains various vitamins that play a role in maintaining the body's immune system, such as vitamins A, B, and C. Even so, the effectiveness of seaweed in preventing disease caused by these viruses still needs further research. 10. Reducing the risk of certain cancers Several studies have shown that the benefits of regularly consumed seaweed can reduce the risk of breast cancer. The soluble fiber found in seaweed is also believed to help suppress the development of colon cancer.
